Details of the Day Stages
Stage One: Grassington to Buckden
Distance: 13 miles
Lunchtime pub: Falcon Inn, Arncliffe
Highest point : 607m on Birks Fell / Old Cote Moor
Highlights: Iron Age settlements, two nature reserves, monastic granges and roads, breathtaking limestone scenery, hunting forests and some beautiful old pubs.
Stage Two: Buckden to Askrigg
Distance: 13 miles
Lunchtime pub: Rose and Crown, Bainbridge
Highest point : 561m on Stake Moss
Highlights: Roman roads and forts, beautiful waterfalls, the legend of the flooded city, a forest village with its horn to guide travellers, fortified farmhouse, Skeldale House as seen on TV and one of the finest green lane walks in England.
Stage Three: Askrigg to Reeth
Distance 13 miles
Lunchtime pub: Kings Head, Gunnerside
Highest point : 500m on Askrigg Common
Highlights: A Haunted bridge, the Corpse Way, hay meadows, Viking settlements, hidden treasure, the legacy of the lead mining industry and probably the most beautiful valley in the world.
Stage Four: Reeth to West Burton
Distance: 11 miles
Lunchtime pub: Wheatsheaf Hotel, Carperby
Highest point : 508m on Gibbon Hill
Highlights: The Cathedral of the Dales, the castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner, Herriots honeymoon hotel, Garibaldis red shirts, spectacular waterfalls and the prettiest village in the Dales.
Stage Five: West Burton to Kettlewell
Distance: 14 miles
Lunchtime pub: Thwaite Arms, Horsehouse
Highest point: 530m on Top Mere Road
Highlights: The secret valley, monastic and stagecoach routes, stones with strange powers, Brigantes dikes and wild desolate moorland.
Stage Six: Kettlewell to Grassington
Distance: 12 miles
Lunchtime pub: Clarendon Hotel, Hebden
Highest point: 512m at Capplestone Gate
Highlights Ancient green lanes, deserted long-houses, numerous abandoned lead mines, the hidden village of the cobblers, 101 ways to cross a stream and the powerful force of Linton Falls.
