76 miles, 6 days, 26 pubs…

Mark Reid’s highly acclaimed guidebook – The Inn Way…to the Yorkshire Dales – charts a 76-mile circular route throughout the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. The walk is divided into six stages and passes 26 traditional Dales inns. Complete with foreword by Luke Casey from Yorkshire TV’s ‘The Dales Diary’.

Top Tips and Info
  • Long Stay parking is limited at Grassington, so please use public transport. If you arrive by car, then enquire at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Information Centre at Grassington about where to park your car. Hotels, B&B’s etc usually allow you to leave your car with them (if you stay with them at the start and end of your walk) – always ‘phone to check. Also, Brigantes Baggage Couriers can arrange parking for the duration of your walk (in addition to their baggage transfer services).
  • There is only one cash-point along the entire route. This is at Grassington at the start of the walk (Barclay’s Bank).
  • At the start of the walk, the Right of Way through Town Head Farm as you leave Grassington has recently been diverted to avoid the farmyard (a permanent legal footpath diversion). The clearly marked diversion is as follows… “Head along Chapel Street then as you reach Town Head turn right up along Bank Lane (SP ‘Dalesway’) and follow this lane up out of the village, then at the junction of tracks turn left through a wall-gate (SP ‘Dalesway’). Head straight on across the field, over a wall-stile then head left through a small wall-gate to join a track (re-joins original path here). Turn right along this track (SP ‘Dalesway’) and follow the clear path straight on through several wall stiles/gaps….” This diverted Right of Way is clearly marked on the ground and is shown on the new OS Explorer OL2 map. This revised route has been included in the 2005 re-print (and subsequent re-prints).
  • If accommodation is in short supply at Buckden, then there are also places to stay at Hubberholme (including the George Inn) and Cray (including the White Lion). Contact the National Park Information Centres for further details.
  • The Thwaite Arms at Horsehouse (lunchtime stop on Stage Four) has limited opening hours mid-week, so phone before you set out. Alternatively, there is a well stocked shop at West Burton.
  • All Overnight Stops have a village shop. There are Outdoor Shops at Grassington and Kettlewell and there are Doctors’ Surgeries at Grassington, Reeth and Aysgarth.
  • The Falcon Inn at Arncliffe is a classic example of a Dales inn with beer straight from the barrel to your pint glass via a porcelain jug – do not miss this pub! The Victoria Arms at Worton is unique – a visit to this traditional Dales pub will be a memorable experience! The Crown Inn at Askrigg does wonderful home-cooked meals and an amazing selection of delicious traditional puddings! Other classic Dales inns not to miss include the Queens Arms (Litton), White Lion (Cray), Rose and Crown (Bainbridge), Kings Arms (Askrigg), Kings Head (Gunnerside), Kings Arms and the Black Bull (Reeth), Thwaite Arms (Horsehouse), King’s Head (Kettlewell) and the Fountaine (Linton). In fact, all of the pubs along the route are great!
  • All 26 pubs along the route have a wooden ‘Inn Way Pub Sign’ attached near to their front doors. There are orienteering ‘clipper’ attached to each of these Pub Signs, with which you can ‘clip’ your Log Book at the back of the book and claim your FREE Inn Way Certificate.
  • There was a small printing error in a limited number of the Second Edition of ‘The Inn Way’ (ISBN 1-902001-00-1, published 1997). The last sentence of page 118 and the first sentence of page 119 should read as follows: “After the bridge turn left then almost immediately right straight up the hill (BW Thorpe) to reach the main road, cross this road and follow the lane opposite into Thorpe and continue to follow this road out of the village bearing right.” An Erratum note to this effect was inserted into the relevant copies of this book. All other books are unaffected, including the First Edition and Third Edition plus all re-prints (1999, 2000, 2002).
