Details of the Day Stages

Stage One: Helmsley to Hutton-le-Hole
Distance: 14 miles
Lunchtime pub Plough Inn, Wombleton
Highest point: 175 metres, Sleightholme Dale to Fadmoor
Highlights: Helmsley’s ‘impregnable’ castle, a thatched inn, the Vale of Pickering, Kirkdale’s Saxon Minster, forest tracks, hidden mills, a Surprise View and arguably the prettiest village in England.

Stage Two: Hutton-le-Hole to Levisham
Distance: 13 miles
Lunchtime pub: New Inn, Cropton
Highest point: 195 metres on Newton Banks
Highlights: Holy wells, step back 1,000 years into a unique Norman crypt, brewing barrels of beer, Roman training camps, a spectacular glacial gorge and the evocative sound of a steam train’s whistle.



Stage Three Levisham to Egton Bridge
Distance: 15 miles
Lunchtime pub: Three pubs at Goathland or the Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole.
Highest point: 260 metres on Simon Howe
Highlights: Precipitous cliffs and breath-taking views, expansive heather moorland, Bronze Age burial mounds, a famous TV policeman, the ancient game of quoits, a classic country pub and the village missed by the Reformation.

Stage Four: Egton Bridge to Rosedale Abbey
Distance: 15 miles
Lunchtime pub: Board Inn, Lealholm
Highest point : 410 metres on Loose Howe, Glaisdale Moor
Highlights : Paved pannierways, a ‘romantic’ bridge, the pretty village hidden ‘amongst the twigs’, a dramatic bird’s eye view of Great Fryup Dale, walking the Motorways of the Middle Ages, ironstone relics, railways in the sky and the ruins of Rosedale’s Priory.

Stage Five: Rosedale Abbey to Hawnby
Distance: 16 miles
Lunchtime pub: Feversham Arms, Church Houses
Highest point: 375 metres on Rudland Rigg
Highlights: Secluded valleys and heather-clad ridges, the mill built by a multi- lingual Reverend, 16th century thatched Spout House, England’s most unusual cricket pitch and the Tale of Two Villages.

Stage Six: Hawnby to Helmsley
Distance: 16 miles
Lunchtime pub: Hare Inn, Scawton
Highest point: 332 metres on Hambleton Street
Highlighta: Table-top mountains, a hidden nunnery, primeval oak forests, ancient drovers’ roads, a Celtic hill fort, the finest view in England, the stinging valley and the magnificent monastic ruins of ‘Rye Vale’.
