Top Tips and Info
  • Long Stay parking is limited at Helmsley, so please use public transport. If you arrive by car, then enquire at the Tourist Information Centre at Helmsley about where to park your car. Hotels, B&B’s and the Youth Hostel etc usually allow you to park your car with them (if you stay with them at the start and end of your walk) – always ‘phone to check.
  • The only cash-point facilities along the entire route are at Helmsley at the start of the walk (Barclay’s & NatWest).
  • There are Outdoor Shops and a Doctors’ Surgery at Helmsley.
  • There are well-stocked shops at the following Overnight Stops – Hutton-le-Hole, Rosedale Abbey and Hawnby. There are shops at Egton ‘on the hill’ and Glaisdale, which are close to Egton Bridge. There is no shop at Levisham.
  • The Star Inn at Harome has won many national awards for its food, and is highly recommended!
  • The lunchtime stop on Stage Two is also a brewery (tours are available) – their full range of award-winning ales can be found on draught in the pub.
  • The Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole is one of the few completely unaltered rural pubs in this country – do not miss it! Other classic country pubs not to miss include the Star Inn (Harome), Plough Inn (Fadmoor), Royal Oak (Gillamoor), Blacksmiths Arms (Lastingham), Horseshoe Hotel (Egton Bridge), Board Inn (Lealholm), Feversham Arms (Church Houses), Sun Inn (Bilsdale), Hare Inn (Scawton).
  • The Sun Inn at Bilsdale does not provide food, although crisps, chocolate etc are available. The recommended lunchtime pub on Stage Five is the Feversham Arms at Church Houses.
  • Why not stay an extra night at Egton Bridge, then catch a train down to Whitby for a day at the seaside – a perfect ‘rest day’ in the middle of your walk!
  • All 31 pubs along the route have a purple and green circular ‘Inn Way Pub Stickers’ in their windows. Make sure you visit all 31 pubs along the way, fill out your Log Book at the back of the book to claim your FREE Inn Way Certificate.
  • Pubs 22 & 23 (The Mitre Inn and the Moon & Sixpence at Glaisdale) both recently closed. This does not affect the route nor the suggested lunchtime or overnight stops. The Pheasant Hotel at Harome has opened, which means that there are 30 pubs along this route.
  • If accommodation is in short supply at the following Overnight Stops, then here is a list of nearby villages where there is additional accommodation. Lastingham (near Hutton-le-Hole); Lockton & Newton-on-Rawcliffe (both near Levisham, although there are deep valleys in between); Egton ‘on the hill’ (near Egton Bridge, although there is a brisk 15-minute walk up a steep hill to get there); Thorngill & Bell End (both near Rosedale Abbey); Laskill (near Hawnby). Contact the local Tourist Information Centres for further details.
